On This Night

On this night, jazz notes hit my ear like flat freight
Silence is my only friend, but she likes to leave
Ancient tea steams a modern cup
Rhythm and his cousin Patience tango in triads
Crisp air enters, looking to pick a fight
But in obvious vacancy appears no troubling cloud
Steel and nylon switch lanes on fixed freeways
As that skin-tight blessing mimics my heart
On this night, old paths are worn anew
Deja vu laughs in the shadows, but waits
On this night, the walls will hold their queue
Far away, a star glows in soundless space
