I used the word 'expedient' in an email this evening, and after sending it off, I immediately began to question if I had used it correctly. I had written something to the effect of "I'll try to be more expedient next time around," meaning that I'd try to act more quickly. However, when I looked up the definition of 'expedient' on Answers.com, I found the following:

Obsolete. Speedy; expeditious.

Apparently my preferred use of the word is no longer relevant in modern English. Fortunately for me, 'speedy' is a phonetic subset of 'expedient,' so it's easier to say and, as far as I know anyway, hasn't been obsoleted.

As far as 'expedient' goes, though, apparently you can still use the word to mean "suited to one's purpose." For example, "After responding to an email, Bernie found out that the word expedient wasn't expedient after all." ;)

Huh, that's news to me too. I've always used the word as you were using it, kinda disappointing that it's supposedly obsolete now. Apple's Dictionary app doesn't even include a reference to speed in its definitions. Guess we're a just a little too old-school.

Because of posts like this I surf the internet and when I found you, the time I felt I was wasting, just turned my thoughts around and now I am thinking I invested my time in something really interesting.
