Bobby Engram at the Bobby Engram Celebrity Softball Game

My wife and I went to the first annual Bobby Engram Celebrity Softball Game in Lacey, WA today and had a blast. The weather left a little to be desired, given that it's June now, but the game's participants more than made up for it with their enthusiasm and good-natured approach to the event.

Bobby Engram started the event this year to help benefit his foundation, which focuses on children with diseases like sickle-cell disease, a disease from which his daughter suffers. Both his daughter and his younger son were active participants in the event, his daughter throwing out the first pitch and his son winning a dance contest between one of the innings.

The Seahawks who attended included, but were not limited to, Seneca Wallace, Ben Obomanu, Darryl Tapp, Maurice Morris, Jordan Babineaux, Kelly Jennings, Josh Wilson, Marcus Trufant, Jordan Kent, Logan Payne, Leonard Weaver, Lofa Tatupu, Steve Vallos, Nate Burleson and Deion Branch. I've got a bunch of photos from the event up on Flickr, and before long I'll probably have some long photos up, too.

As for the actual softball game, the offense laid it on thick on the defense, getting up by as many as eight points at one point, but a combination of favoring calls from the umpire (and Tony Ventrella, the event's main MC) and some conveniently made-up rules (e.g. a team down by eight points or more can start stealing bases), the defense worked their way back, finally only losing by one point. The final score was 16-15.

I'm really glad my wife and I were able to attend the event and have such a good time, while at the same time helping to contribute to such a good cause. I'm already looking forward to next year's game.
