I sat eating Pho for lunch with a friend and coworker today when I looked up at the silent television to the front of the restaurant. Once my mind registered the image before me -- a plane floating in the Hudson river -- I read the caption and saw that the plane had come down near Manhattan. I immediately feared the worst, thinking that history might be repeating itself far too soon.
As I looked at the people around me in the restaurant, more and more eyes became glued to the television. Then, I noticed more and more people looking around at the people around them, kind of with this unspoken understanding that we were all thinking the same thing. It was very surreal.
Fortunately, fate had different plans for 1/15.
