Firebird is no more, friends. It was announced today that the Mozilla browser formerly known as Firebird (and before that, Phoenix) is now officially named Firefox. I, personally, really like the new name, and I especially like the branding effort that the Mozilla folks have put forth thus far. I quickly adapted one of their new buttons so that I could replace the old Firebird button I had in the sidebar.

It's amazing how quickly news of the name change and the new release spread across the web today. Of course, any time a product or website gets Slashdotted, there's going to be a flood of traffic, but mirrors were readily available, and as soon as I got home I downloaded not only Firefox 0.8, but Thunderbird 0.5 as well.

So, it turns out my predictions toward the beginning of the year were a little off, but with all the excitement and hype surrounding the delayed release of Firefox, it's easy to see that it was well worth the wait.
