There's an article over at CNNSI today titled Blue with envy that uncovers the main reason why so many people hate the Duke Blue Devils – jealousy. As big a Duke-hater as I am, I can agree with such an assessment. Not personally, of course, but on a wider level. The article points out how Duke has almost become synonymous with the New York Yankees. Now there's a team I really hate...but let's not get into that now.

The truth is, I hate Duke because they are the arch rivals of my all-time favorite college basketball team, the North Carolina Tarheels. I am not jealous of Duke...when they win it's because they deserve to win. I respect them as a team and I respect their coach, Mike Krzyzewski, almost as much as I respect Dean Smith (emphasis on almost). However, all that respect leaks away when the Blue Devils face off against UNC, and then returns when the game is over (this part always takes a little longer when my Tarheels come out on the losing end).

It may be true that there are many people out there who hate Duke just like they do the Yankees, but there are also those of us who respect them just as much as we hate them. You have to respect a team like that. Year in and year out they find themselves atop the rankings and deep in the tournament. However, being the Tarheel fan that I am, make no mistake about who I'll be rooting for this Saturday. UConn is my new favorite team...and judging by their recent play in comparison to Duke's, I'd say they'll be the favorite to win as well.

I hate Puke and I'm not jealous, I assure you. They are just so freaking annoying to look at that you can't help but hate them. From their coach to their players to most important of all, their fans. Their fans make the hatred even more fierce. Bunch of trust fund, out of state monkies who have no idea what real life is all about. They're a bunch of clueless rich kids. They wouldn't last a minute on their own separated from momy and daddy's wallet. They always complain and cry when they lose eventhough they almost always get all the calls. And then there are the players, I don't what it is about them, but they have the most annoying, arrogant, cheesy, cry baby vibe about them. Just think about, Duhon, Dante Jones, Battier, Redick, Randoph, Jason Williams, etc..... I can go on and on. I honestly can not name one Puke player that I like, not a single one. But, I'm happy to say that I've met my first Duke fans that I like. I was absolutely shocked, so I try to be much nicer around them.

I can't name a single thing that there is to like about Duke's basketball program. Their sense of smugness and entitlement absolutely confounds me to the core. So Coach K has won 3 national championships? So has Bobby Knight, and he did it without the benefit of being a media darling (which is another long, drawn out issue in itself). What's more, those titles are all that Duke has. I'm a Kentucky grad and lifelong fan, and even though we own the records for wins and winning percentage and are second in championships, somehow our program doesn't get the attention those overachievers in Durham get. While the stereotype of the average UK fan is probably more or less accurate, there's a sizeable contingent that are actually educated and successful people who understand basketball history. We don't like UNC or Dean Smith, but for the most part we don't hate them (except for 'Sheed stomping on McCarty in '95; and I still think Smith delayed his retirement a few extra years just to beat Rupp's win record). We don't like UCLA because they have four more titles than we do, but you won't run across many fans who hate the Bruins, and most if not all respect and like John Wooden. But Duke? Hatred is a mild descriptor of the emotions that spring up at the mention of that word. I'll never forget the 2.6 second mark in overtime of that '92 final four game; it's a moment forever emblazoned in my mind and soul (I'm still surprised no one's killed Laettner yet, but then again, his embarassment of a career in the pros compared to Mashburn is almost consolation in itself...almost). When Wayne Turner burned Wojo 3 times in a row in the '98 tournament, you'd think we'd had redemption, but not really because that damn Laettner shot (HE SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN IN THE GAME, HE'D FOULED OUT DURING REGULATION HAD THE REFS NOT BEEN BLIND) is played over and over again on TV, and now in commercials. I can't stand it. Sure, it was "the greatest game ever played", but we lost, and most of us are really bitter about that. Basically, to summarize my rambling here, I hope we beat Utah on Friday so that Rondo or Buike can shove the ball right down Redick's throat in the Elite Eight and give those bastards what they deserve - a humiliating loss on national television.

i happen to love duke. those are my boyz. all you people that talk about them, well you keep talking. if you got a problem with someone, you are the one with the problem. you can trash talk me or send me a mean email but those are my boyz and i will defend them. what will you do when they win the 06 championship? i dont got time for people who hate the boyz. i love jj redick and the rest of the team. the only reason you choose to pick on duke is because they are a threat to everyone and you hate jj redick because hes good.

dana on August 01, 2005 at 8:57 AM:

oh by the way, what so you know about the duke players? they are all sweet and have a good heart. so since you hate duke because they are a big rival of the tarheels, i can hate the tarheels too?

We the Duke-endowed have better and bigger things to do in life than to worry about your red-necked jealousies.

Carolina Tarhoe fans should not be jealous of the dominance of Duke. The Blue devils are a modern day Dynasty, the closet thing we will ever see to Wooden and UCLA of old. Coach K already has 3 Big dance rings and I'm sure more are to follow. Dean Smith won 2 after coaching for like 60 years, But both were won on bad plays by the other team, "Time Out" being my favorite. To be a duke fan you have to look at how K coaches and WHO he recruits, K is a direct product of the greatest of all Sir Bobby Knight because he played for and coached with him. . So if you hate, team work, DICIPLINED non-thug players who play hard to win and pull the pants up over their Butt then hate Duke if you must, continue to cheer for your Tarheals with their Faggety blue uniforms and gay looking court, I’ll STICK WITH THE DYNASTY.

AND BY THE WAY COACH K will bring the gold BACK to the Great USA
