Now that Thunderbird 1.0 is available, it's interesting to hear one of Thunderbird's lead engineers talk about what's coming in future versions of the mail client. In a recent interview with Neowin (via MozillaZine), David Bienvenu says:

Now is a great time for enterprises to start evaluating Thunderbird. We plan on focusing on more enterprise specific work over the coming year. Calendar integration is one such example and the continued maturation of the Sunbird calendar client over the next year will help with that.

I'm used to the calendar integration of Outlook 2003 since I use that at work, so it's nice to know that something along those lines may eventually make it into my favorite email application. I've tried several times to utilize what Sunbird currently has to offer, but it just never sticks. I don't want to have to run a separate application that takes up space on my taskbar just to receive alerts about upcoming events. As far as I'm concerned, having it sit there in my taskbar is almost as bad as having a sticky note stuck to my monitor.

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to calendar integration with Thunderbird – especially if it's as transparent and seemingly flawless as the already existing junk mail filtering and new mail notification system.

Looks like the Mozilla website isn't working too well; or its overlaoded. I can't seem to download Thunderbird at any rate. Who can hook me up?
