For the past couple of weeks I've been doing some domain name research, trying to find a unique .com domain name that I could use for purposes I have not yet decided on. A while back I came up with a laundry list of available names (thanks to Dotster) that were reasonable, but none really stood out. I didn't give up, though. I kept looking and yesterday I actually bought a new .com domain. It only cost $8.95, so why not, right? Then, just a few hours later I came up with an idea for an even better name, and decided to just try and access it. To my surprise I ended up at one of those "domain farms" that bought up thousands of domains a couple years ago hoping to sell them for outrageous prices. But hey, at least there was a chance at nabbing it, right? And after reading an article at Wired yesterday about the fall in price of domain names, I figured there might just be a chance I could purchase it for not too much money.

Turns out I was wrong. After sending in an inquiry, the guy comes back asking for $3,500. Um, no. I just paid $8.95 for an equally palpable, if not as pretty, domain name, so there's no way I'm going to shell out over 3 Gs just for another .com identity. Of course, he came back asking what my budget was, but I just said "I can't see myself ever paying over $100 for a simple domain name." Afterall, it's not really the domain name that matters...it's the content that keeps people coming back.
