The necessary and somewhat annual ritual of wiping my computer clean and reinstalling the OS has been put underway tonight. Remarkably enough, it was backing up my data that took the greatest chunk of time. When your CD burner only writes at 2x speed and successfully burns on about 1 out of every 3 attempts, backing up can be quite a pain in the arse. I finally got 4 discs of data saved, and now I'm sitting here typing a blog entry on my girlfriend's iBook as I watch XP install itself on my trusty old Gateway G6-350. In need of a new computer much? I think so.

Fortunately enough, though, as long as I've gone through this somewhat grueling process about once a year – formatting the C drive and reinstalling the OS – I seem to keep both me and my computer happy. I've gotten so used to using XP at work that I've finally decided to replace 2000 on my home computer. So this means I've successfully moved from Windows 98 to Windows ME to Windows 2000 to Windows XP over the course of the 5 years I've had my computer. I just really hope that by the time Longhorn is released I've got a new computer, and the old Gateway can take a bit of a breather and maybe just run Red Hat into its old age.
