While we're on the subject of spam, I want to recommend that anyone who is interested in approaches to stopping spam at their blog (especially if you happen to run a home-grown CMS like I do) head on over to Ian Clifton's blog and read How To Analyze And Stop Comment Spam. It's a long post, but worth more than its weight in gold in terms of explaining how to defeat comment spam on your own terms. It puts posts like Time-sensitive nofollow and Don't Throw Away Your Blog Spam, Recycle It to shame.

Ian's article is great, gives me a different perspective on how to tackle comment spam on my own custom CMS. Thanks for discussing that article!
