I've been working on putting together a video in Windows Movie Maker tonight, and everything was going smoothly. However, when it came time to publish, I noticed that the .wmv file the program output had something wrong with it. Not only was the video vertically squished in such a way that it only took up the upper half of the 320x240 size, but the bottom half was filled with a green bar.
While working with various video formats on Windows Vista, I've gone through my share of video codecs, ranging from Xvid to DivX to the Vista Codec Package. Therefore, I figured one of (if not a combination of) those was to blame. However, I couldn't quite figure out how to fix the problem.
Under the Compatibility tab in the dialog available from Tools, Options in Windows Movie Maker, I tried unchecking various filters in hopes that a certain combination would prove lucky and my problem would go away. However, no matter what combination I tried, I couldn't get rid of the green bar and the vertical displacement.
Luckily enough, as is so often the case, I was able to find a golden nugget of information after some Googling and some forum topic jumping. I eventually found myself at this post:
I have discovered how bad native MPEG4 decoding is under Vista (it seemed to be dropping framerate or something - jerky panning) and found another solution. (re-enable the XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder again if you turned it off using my previous instruction).
Go to <Start Menu><All Programs><XVid><Configure Decoder>. In the <Output> options, choose <Compatibility Renderer> and click <OK>
This still utilises the XVid MPEG4 codec and resolved the half green screen issue.
Hope this helps.
And it helped indeed. After selecting that option in the Xvid settings, I'm now able to publish with the typical Windows Movie Maker settings and see my video in the correct aspect ratio without the green bar.

I was freaking out! Never could have figured it out myself! KEEP THIS UP FOR EVERYONE!! A GEM!!!
thank you so much xxx
Thank you sooooooooo much.
All is now well.
An update. Selecting Compatibility Renderer certainly masked the issue however the resulting DVD from movie maker had grey bars at the top and bottom of a widescreen movie instead of black.
When I originally got my new comp with Vista pre installed, Movie Maker would not play xvid. I installed 'Vista Codec Package' published by Shark007 and all worked well with no green bar. Later I installed GKnot to convert some stuff to xvid and from then on movie maker started to publish with the green bar. It appears it was because GKnot installed an 'xvid mpeg-4 video codec' which movie maker does not like. I opened movie maker, went to tools/options and the compatibility tab and unchecked the 'xvid mpeg-4 video decoder' from the list and all is now as it should be. I am no expert but I guess it has reverted back to using the one in the original codec package which is compatible.
Thank you thank you thank you.. You just saved my computer from being thrown out the window!!!
THANK YOU SOO MUCH!!
:D

IT WORKS!
Thanks dude I owe you big time.
=)
I've seen this mentioned everywhere I've looked because I had the same problem. However, what no one can tell me how to fix is that now that the DVD menu is free from the green bar, the actual video itself looks like widescreen stretched vertically to fit a normal tv. Before the "green bar fix" it didn't do that. I have read several posts on the internet about this problem coming up after the "green bar fix" but no one can tell them how to fix it. My video files are in widescreen and checking "4:3" or "16:9" in the options menu does no good at all. Any way to fix this?
My heart felt thanks. I put together a great video, and when I tried to export it anywhere, all I got was the half screen of green! I'm at work right now, but when I get home I'll get this done finally get started on the next video! Again, thanks for posting this!
I'm having the same problem as Trey. The green bar problem is fixed . . . but now it doesn't play back in widescreen . . . how do you fix that?
OMG!
Thank you so much.
You saved our lives.

Hey Bro,
Thankx a ton. I followed ur instructions and now my Windows Movie Maker is working perfectly fine.
You dont know but u saved me a hell lot of time.
Thankx again
You rock. You really rock.
Bernie,
You live up to your motto so directly. You should have $10 for each box of gratitude left here. Lotta stress wiped away. Suggest you contact RCA Small Wonder and negotiate. RCA long ago was top dog; can't call them more than a flea-bitten mutt with one of the most poorly designed, simplistic corporate support web sites I've ever seen. Well, David New York Times Pogue raved on the cam yesterday, so he'll be hearing soon enough of this problem and he'll push some buttons. I contacted the codec site and the response was "Huh? RCA? Who's that?"
Thanks! http://douglashopkins.blogspot.com/
That's great help. Too bad Microsoft is not fixing this kind problem even with Vista SP1
You're Awesome
cheers dude! :)
It didn't work. The green is still there. Any advice?

I still have the Green Bar problem!!! I've tried the Compatibility Renderer thing, to no luck. I tried swapping around a few other options, no luck. I redownloaded xVid and reinstalled it, which gave me a newer looking program, and tried everything all over again...no luck.

Yahoo! I got lucky it worked, no more mr. green!

Thanks on the answer to the green bar problem. It fixed the menu part where the green bar was a problem but now I have lost my widescreen viewing of my movies. I am set up at 16 x 9 widescreen but after changing the compatibility render, I now have compacted movies. Make any sense? Any suggestions? Thanks again. Mark

Thanks so much for this fix. I was really getting annoyed at the green bar. I'm republishing my video now and hoping this fixes it. :D
PLEASE HELP! I'm afraid of importing a codec. I'm worried it will interfere with my computer's normal operation. Is it safe? I have Window Movie Maker for Vista and i have the green bar issue. Also, does Xvid operate as a seperate program? Is that why you go to "All Programs"? Or does it operate within Windows Media Player?(P.S I'm not the smartest person. Could you explain this process a little? I'm so sorry for any inconvenience!!!)
I was just clipping a video of my first child in utero and was getting the green bar issue, so I went to my trusty friend GOOGLE and your site was the first hit under "Windows Movie Maker, green bar"

To quote family guy, "AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
oh, and thanks :-)
I tried the things that you had mentioned and to tell you the truth I am not to sure if i didnt completly right, but i am trying to make a highlight film for my football team and i am pretty much at the point of punching my computer but is there anything else you could tell me that i can try or like another site other than Windows Movie Maker. Just anything because this thing is really frustrating me.
Found your site in three clicks from google. Took me about ten seconds to resolve.
Thanks for the post,
Legend! This had been bugging my happiness all night but thanks to Google and your post all is well.
Cheers
I LOVE YOU *KISS* THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!
I have a question though. Do you also know what to do when the thing won't publish because "some sources are not found"or something??
I had the same problem as others that even though I followed the above directions, it STILL wouldn't work. After a couple of hours of searching, I found this suggestion (bless his heart for bringing me out of my nightmare). It worked for me. You don't thing doing is bad in any way is it?
Click :file
then:Publish movie
a box will apear click what you need (usualy this computer)
decide on a name and where you want to save it then
click:next
Three differend options appear click the last optio wich reads
:More settigs and click the dropdown box
click DV-AVI(PAL) .....though I only saw DV-AVI (NTSC) so that's what I used.
then click publish and the green lines are gone
Okay, well now I see a problem with my above solution....the file is too big for me to upload to youtube! (It's like 1.8gb for a 9 min movie.) Aggghhhh.......anyone have any advice? Bueller? Bueller?
Oh my gosh.... Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!
As a follow up to my 2 above posts, I used Windows Media Encoder to convert the avi file to .wmv. It looks great on my computer, but after I tried uploading it to BOTH youtube and google video, it's horribly, horribly blurry. WTF??? This is my 3rd day messing with this and I'm about ready to jump out a window.
Amy, sites like YouTube and Google Video convert your video to Flash format once its on their server. They do this for bandwidth-related reasons, mostly. However, there are some recommendations on ensuring your video looks the best it can once uploaded. This support page, for example, provides some tips on video formats, resolutions, etc.
Clearly, you've heard this a dozen times but I wanted to thank you so much for saving my life. This was the first time I'd used so video clips in WMM and I thought I was going to have to give up on my new little hobby. In five minutes, you solved a problem that I'd been having for three straight days. Thank you so much for posting this!
Thankyou so much for this! It's been driving me crazy.
ok something went wrong, I did everything it said but when I want back to my WMM I tried to play my video but the whole video is black, the music still works but the published video doesn't is black and so is the original one. What happened? Please help.
Thanks dude. You're the best.
Thank you!!! It worked! I was so depressed before I found this information ... I really didn't know what I was going to do ... all those hours spent slaving for a video that I couldn't show or play for anyone ... thank you thank you thank you again!
Thanks you so much.
I was exactly doing the things you discribed in you mission to find the solution to this green screen problem.

I was doing a vid for a week then published it and it had this problem! Yr a life saver!
Thanks so much for posting this - it was driving me insane
i'm so glad this is a problem that can be fixxed! i love making videos so much but i can only make slideshows because of the green box. but i don't really know enough (pitiful i know) to understand your solution. i went to the start menu, then to all programs, but i can't find anything called XVid. do i have it or is it some different place? please reply, not urgent but i'd really like to fix the problem.
You're a lifesaver. Thank you.
thanks for taking your time to explain this it helped right away thankyou!
Mart T. hit it on the head. This didn't work for me, but I found the forum you found and:
"Try going to ToolsOptions...Compatibility. UNcheck the DivX and XVid decoders 'filters'. Then you should be able to import DivX and XVid movies and you won't see the green stuff and squashed movie. That has been my experience."
They're talking about Movie Maker / Tools / Options... Compatability. Works great now, thanks for the point in the right direction.
wow clearly this problem has been known for at least a year... you'd think Microsoft would have patched it by now... ridiculous...
anyways thank you.. your fix worked great
THANKS SO MUCH for this post!!! Saved me hours and hours of searching, fixed the problem within 5 minutes and got my other videos that had that stupid green screen to work! Fantastic post!
DJ Black Sheep

FUCK YEAH!!! IM SOOO HAPPY !! TYTYTTYTY I THOUGHT ID LOST MY ENTIRE AMV BUT IT WORKED AND NOW I CAN REPUBLISH IT :D THANKS SOOO MUCH!!!! YOU ROCK!!
This blog/comment page has definately helped me! Many thanks to the host and all who have posted. It seems to me, however, that the original solution only caused another problem, as at least a few others here have commented on... My green bar issue was quickly fixed, but when I tried to burn avis to the 16:9 widescreen format DVD using windows DVD burner, the resulting video was compressed horizontally to 4:3, no matter what options I tried setting to keep the original widescreen. I also had that grey bar problem on both sides of the video. FINALLY, as a few of you suggested I installed the Vista codec package from shark007 First, as is suggested I UNinstalled my current xvid BEFORE installing this package. And yeah everything works like a charm... no green OR grey bars AND the original aspect ratio is kept intact! Click here for more info, and download free package! http://shark007.net/
oh god, thank u so much!!!!! i was working on it nearly whole night till i fand your post!
thanks for this!
Thanks man. I think I now hate Vista, I should've bought another computer with XP!
This tip does not work for me. All your comments and suggestions to fix this problem doesn't do anything for me. WHY CAN"T I WATCH THE ELECTRIC APRICOT WITHOUT THIS FUCKING GREEN BAR!?!?!
I was having the same problem with Vista, couldn't fix it until I found this piece of advice - thank you so much!! No more green bars for me :-)
I had the same issue, an no xvid in my program listing. I am running Klite code pack. The xvid Mpeg4 did not exist in my WMM list either. So I unchecked the "DivX Video Decoder 0004" and that did the trick.
_Ted
thanks a lot. :)

Thank you sooooo much! It really didnt piss me off much longer than 2 mins cause the first thing i did was google it, and your little help thingy here worked.
I PROBABLY would have been pissed right off and thrown the computer out of the window if I had to try n figure it out on my own going thru a million different options on windows movie maker... I would have just snapped. So thank you kind sir for having this help link posted, even tho the problem only troubled me for about 30 seconds. haha!
Success!
Ciao!

Ok, you officially rock! Haha even over 2 years later, your advice saved me from throwing my PC off the veranda :) Thankyou so much!
THANKS MAN!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Damn, I'm glad I found this page. I was about to go ape shit on this vista piece of crap.
DANKE!
Just adding to the massive list of "thank you" comments. You saved my grade in a class, and a lot of my time.
Thankyou SO much, this article is amazing :D
dude thanks so much, but now i can't open my project without it not responding............
Being an old person, I read all the way through the thread before touching anything.
Then all I did was go to MovieMaker, tools, options, compatibility, and unchecked Xvid Mpeg 4 box, restarted MovieMaker (or the computer if it won't), and was able to publish the movie without the green bar. This, of course, is as suggested in the posts above, but it must be difficult for people to wade through everything and work out what to do first.
Is there anyway you can put that simple fix at the top of the thread?
Thanks for sharing. Has all the good feeling and karma sent your way improved your life in any way since you first posted the solution?
Make sure when u download Xvid that you also "install" it! Otherwise it won't show on your list of programs. You can then do the following:
Go to
This is amazing, im so happy now i found out how to do it after 2 hours searching on net :)
Thanks man!
Thank you soooooo much!!
Thanks for taking the time to write this up. Worked a treat.
Judging from the massive list above me, I'm not alone
Thanks
DrCJBoduma
Just to say I didn't get a full fix from this method although it definately saved me a lot of time and I am grateful, if anyone else was in my position this is what I had to do.
1) Ensure Xvid codec is installed (current version is 1.2.2) it will be in your programs list via control panel. You can google xvid to get it free.
2) Choose the combatability renderer option as discribed above.
3) in Movie Maker | Tools | Options | Compatability | then clear all markers except xvid, I had to reset to defaults before it showed up... Now it has disappeared again and it is replaced with a marker for AVi Decompressor system32/quartz.dll - I can't shed any more light on why or what there I am afraid, but it worked for me.
The quality was good HD output.
Lol, never had this problem on my notebook with vista, but my desktop, also running under vista fucked up my video with that frustrating green bar :O!
But it's fixed now :), really TY :D
I'm adding this to the LONG list, but thank you for this information. it's 5am and my project is due in a few hours. life saver.
Thanks for the info, it worked. and the blue text warned me it might be outdated....guess not :)
thankyou very much that helped out a lot now i can make my videos
this site was a godsend, I managed to get rid of the green bar on my video, but it seems that my video has now gone smaller when I play it back, any ideas on how I can fix that problem please.
thank you. i wouldve faild my class if it wasnt for you.
you just helped upload a video to youtube ;>
thankyou so much T-T
well, a much easier way to do this, on windows movie maker, go to
@ Pat on September 22, 2007 at 1:30 AM:
Didn't work for me, so I downloaded the vista codecpack. Now I get "Uninstall ALL codec related installations before installing this comprehensive package."!
All codec "related" insts!? How vague is that! & where do I find them all? I must have a 100-odd video apps - players, editors, converters, subtitlers etc. No way am I going to uninstall them all!
Tried unchecking Xvid in Tools/options. Didn't work either.
Thank you.
Your a God!
2 years later and you are still getting thank you's. Well here is another one. you are the man. thanks a lot, i have been trying to figure it out for months. Now I can contiune editiing my large porn collection :)
Thanks a lot man.......God bless
thanks a lot!!! this really helped me. you can check out the videos that it helped put on youtube by searching my username on it. (videogame reviews and such) once again thanks a ton!!!
OK, I'm happy for everyone else who got the "green monster" problem solved by following Bernie's technique.
For me, though, I'm still stuck with the problem because when I try to do this: "Go to
EDIT/CORRECTION of my just prior post:
My copy/paste of Bernie's quote should have read "Go to Start Menu --> All Programs --> XVid --> Configure Decoder. In the Output options, choose Compatibility Renderer and click OK."
Leaving in his < > brackets caused his bracketed words to be deleted when I pasted the quote! Sorry for any confusion.
Thank you so much, you saved my life....... had to download Xvid but after that it was sorted.
Thanks a million! U saved my life :)
Thanks you very much!
In fact, this hadn't happened to me all the time when publishing movies. Most of my movies went okay, when I only used pictures. However, once I started using videos things went rapidly downhill.
Again, this was the first link on Google, thanks very much!
Rooren
you just saved my education.
i had to make a horror film, but had the same problem.
THANK YOU :)
Wow, 2 years worth of thank you comments. Though im not suprised as this has been doing my head in for ages!
Im currently trying method 1 as written above with downloading the xvid codec so hopefully that will work.
If not, ill be trying the tools settings like written above,
I just hope ONE method works for me as ive been making a video review for the last 3 days and havent been able to work out why the bottom half kept publishing in green!
Thank you :)
what if you don't have xvid?
thanks!!!!!!!
you just saved my marriage, thank you!
When I do it and go to publish my movie it gets to the loading bar and then just crashes. I really need help for this or a way to make a Vista Movie Maker project work on XP.
FOR THOSE WHO HAVE FAILED IN ALL INSTRUCTIONS
(you cant change the compatibility in WMM and you cant change the configure decoder in Xvid)
I found something interesting that may help, though you will need to download a converter from mp4 to avi. (with a simple search on maybe download.com
My discoery was....I was able to publish a movie with an AVI file and not MP4 .. and it came out with no green bar
Probably b/c quicktime = mac
and WMM = Windows...
AVIs come out with no green bar at the bottom.
You're the best! This was driving me nuts - and I've used movie maker a LOT...and this is the first time it's happened!
You Rock!
Aneasier way to fix this problem is to go to Tools > Options > Advanced and disable either of the DivX codecs
I click on configure decoder and an error comes up saying "error loading xvid.ax the specified model cannot be found"
This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you very much!
Thank you!!!!!! 2 years later and this is EXACTLY what I needed.. Worked perfectly!!! Thank you for saving me my sanity!!!!! LOL!!!
So I split a move in half. Publish the first half and it comes out great. Do the exact same thing that i did the first time with the second half..... WHAT IS THIS GREEN BLOB!??!!
4 attempts later I start google'ing.
20 minutes later... I LOVE YOU!!!!
I literally spent all day working on a vid for christmas and almost burst into tears when I saw that green bar!
Unfortunately, I do not have Xvid...so I downloaded it, and that didn't work. I downloaded the Vista codec and that did nothing either.
But, I found a way.
When you go to publish your movie, it gives you the option of settings go down to MORE SETTINGS and select DV-AVI (NTSC) Your movie will be saved as an .avi...and won't have that green bar!
Still, I have to continue with this chain of thank you's for getting me to thinking like that!
I Love you!!!
Thank you very much! I am so happy now :)
Thank you sooooooooooooooo much, I've been banging my head against a wall for hours over this. You are a life saver !
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! What can I say...except my hair got a little thinner until I stumbled upon this. It worked like a charm!!!!
OMG, I have been FREAKING OUT and actually CRYING about this problem for months now!! I finally decided to Google it today. And I am SO GLAD I did! I have DivX and Windows Vista so I saw that the way the guy said he did it with Xvid would not work for me. I started to freak out AGAIN thinking there would never be a way for me to fix the green bar. But then, thank God, I found a post by the name of Pat that said he/she had download a Windows Vista Codec Package by the name of Shark007. So, I downloaded it and IT WORKED!! I am SO happy now to be able to work on my beloved videos again. I am FOREVER grateful to this website for pointing me in the right direction!! :)
BTW, here is the link to the website if you can't find it in the posts: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Advanced-Vista-Codec-Package-Download-55586.html

Fantastic advice! I don't have an 'XVid' link on all programs like some of the others but it fixed by opening Movie Maker and clicking on 'Tools' - 'options' - compatibility' - and unchecking the 2 items with decoder in them (DivX decoder filter' and 'DivX H.264 Decoder') then clicked ok.
Just published the project and it is now fine.
Well done chaps :-D

Oh my god thank you so much that's been bugging me for a good 9 months now! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! :D
funny years-long list of 'thank you' messages. And (no suprise...) also a thank you!!!! from me. Same as much posters: first hit in google. Solved in 1 minute.
I have divx installed on my pc. Never had a problem burning dvds with xp. At first I kept getting "Window has stopped working" when adding files. After a couple of windows updates i sucessfully added files but they burnt with the 50% of the video a bright green.
After downloading xvid codecs, the green went but the video is cropped on either side and the music is out of sync with the video and speeds up in places anda bit jerky.
Haven't a clue what to do now. Should i totally delete divx
Thanks

Hi,
I do not have Xvid to start with. I have Dvix. I played with all possible combinations under it's "Decoder configuration utility"
...NO LUCK!!!
Then I simply unchecked "Dvix Decoder filter" under Movie Maker's tools>settings>combatibility.
IT WORKS NOW!!!
:>)
Thanks so much man, I thought I'd just wasted hours making a video and thought something was corrupt. This was the 2nd site I got help from and it didn't fix the problem but with all the info from other people as well I got there in the end. Here is the finished product if anyone cares to watch:

Oh my gosh, this helped me sooo much! Thank you!!!!
thanks so much!!! I have been working on some video editing and this was such a pain in the arse! This was such a time saver. Okay, for those of you who are using 64-bit vista...simply google 64-bit XVid Codec and you'll be in good shape...the 32-bit will not work.
I have movie maker 6.0 on vista home premium i dont have the options you all do but i still have the green bar problem and i dont know what to do i did what you all did to the filter but i dont have the same options please somebody help me i need my videos the movie maker have unsuspected errors and shuts down i throw my hands up what do i do
THANK YOU SO MUCH! YOU MADE ME SO HAPPY

It says i dont have Xvid /: what do i doooo
Thank you!
Thankyou so much.
Alright so I've gone over this entire page and still can't figure out why my movie is publishing with a half green screen. I downloaded the media codec pack and the movie shows up in the preview screen, but has a small icon for every movie in the edit bar. Kind of annoying and I feel there shouldn't be so many icons. So I goto publish the movie and I get the half green screen everytime. I then download divx and got rid of media codec pack and now my video doesn't play at all in the preview screen. I checked Compatibility Renderer in the output section. I don't understand why my movie is not playing in the preview section. Is there another codec package I should download or is there a way to render the setting on the divx package to show the videos. Anything would help. Been trying to publish this movie for days and no luck.
hey Dave - I didn't have the exact pack mentioned in this post, but I decided to have a look inside Movie Maker. Here's what I found:
Tools -> Options -> Compatibility
There was a checkbox for ffdshow Video Decoder that was UNchecked. I checked it and my problems were solved. I think this CODEC comes with Media Player Classic Home Theater version or something.
I was also experiencing a LOT of errors, the program was crashing all the time, etc. SO FAR those issues have gone away too. Oh I'm using Vista. And not best pleased about it either.
Hope this helps!
Regardless, THANK YOU to the poster of this page!
Thankyou.
I. LOVE. YOU.
Thanks Man!
I am finding that my movie only plays in the preview screen if I have the Media Player Coded Pack installed. Is there a way to configure this pack so when I publish there is no half green screen?
Holy shit!! Thank you so much! Your my idol
Thanks so much!
when i went to "all programs" i did not have xvid, but the website
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Advanced-Vista-Codec-Package-Download-55586.html
which was previously provided by "Pat" helped. Just download the codecs (and hit deny when it wants you to install yahoo toolbar, etc.)
I did not have to restart my computer for this to work, but i did have to restart windows movie maker.
Thanks so much!
Adam
Awesome - got it working on mine as well. Just a tip to anyone where xVid doesn't should up in the Start Menu.
I had this problem, and I just downloaded xVid, installed it, and then followed the instructions above. This did the trick!
THANK YOU AND ALISA!!!!
Nothing here worked for me. I downloaded everything i could and tried every combination of checking and unchecking boxes. Then i saw this:
"Alisa on December 22, 2009 at 6:10 PM:
I literally spent all day working on a vid for christmas and almost burst into tears when I saw that green bar!
Unfortunately, I do not have Xvid...so I downloaded it, and that didn't work. I downloaded the Vista codec and that did nothing either.
But, I found a way.
When you go to publish your movie, it gives you the option of settings go down to MORE SETTINGS and select DV-AVI (NTSC) Your movie will be saved as an .avi...and won't have that green bar!
Still, I have to continue with this chain of thank you's for getting me to thinking like that! "
And it worked!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
After burning from WDM..i end up with half green menu screen but the video plays fine..anybody know how to fix this..ive tried every codec..vista codec pack, ffdshow, k-lite, xvid, etc.
This hasn't helped. I have DiVx not xvid and can't find anything you're talking about.
thank you so much your advice worked.
Thank you!!!
This will let you go to xvid. It is reliable, I used it.
http://www.koepi.info/xvid.html
Hope this helps.
OMG, thank you SO much!
I have a project due to this week and this just saved my ass!
Thanks again(;
THANK YOU!! Nevre before have i gotten such a quick simple explanation of how to fix a problem :oD Your a star.
I don't have DivX installed but I still have this problem. Any ideas? Please. I am going insane.
Awesome - Thanks
omg thank you so much! ive been up till 3am trying to fix this, so THANK YOU!
My girlfriend was frustrated with the green gash problem and this post help me save her from her misery. Awesome.
Thank you so much for this! You rock!
I did not have Xvid installed, have DivX. Please note: I had to use a computer WITH VISTA in order for the below Idea to work. If your using XP like I originally was then save your movie to a memory card/CD whatever and get it to a VISTA then when you open a movie maker you may have to select IMPORT MEDIA ITEMS. I was unable to just open the movie I saved because nothing is ever that easy. Congrats to the people who got it working with the original idea, but I had to read 5 or 6 different Ideas from you people before I got it. It's times like this I really F'n appreciate Bloggers. HAHA! If there was a donate money link I would... I went a week stressin about this shiz and its finally over and I WIN!
below are the instructions I followed. good luck!
I found a way.
When you go to publish your movie, it gives you the option of settings go down to MORE SETTINGS and select DV-AVI (NTSC) Your movie will be saved as an .avi...and won't have that green bar!
thank you so much. i was just lucky i encountered your website immediately
YOU SHOULD WORK FOR MICROSOFT
Oh my gosh this just made my night 110% better. I've probably re-published my video like 20 times trying every different possible way to fix it when I finally decided to google it. Thank you so much for this post it totally worked =) What did the world do without Google?
<3
Where can XVid be found? I can't seem to find it.

Thanks so much for your help, i have finally fixed the issues with Windows Movie Maker thanks to yourselves. Thanks again so much
Oh dear God, thank you thank you thank you, this has been plaguing me for months, I only wish I'd found this sooner!
Adding to your years-long list of thank yous! I also want to thank Alyssa for her suggestion to save as .avi instead; that FINALLY got rid of the green bar after the xvid solution failed.
HELP!
Please, I have the same Problem, since a MONTH!!
I'm freaking out right now, but I don't even have that filter!!

Hi, can you see the WINDOWS logo? click on it, you will see a list and underneath you will see ALL PROGRAMS. Click on ALL PROGRAMS. You should see a list of all programs installed on your computer. If you skim through you should see "XVid". It should be a the bottom of the list since it starts with X providing it was installed on your PC. Voila and goodluck.
THANKYOU!!! I was pulling my last strings of hair until I found this solution. This actually worked!!!!!!!!!! :DDDDD
I LOVE YOU THANKS!!
This hasn't solved the problem for me :-( anyone else have any other ideas? I've been working on this video for ages, and I can't even publish it.
I LOVE YOUUU! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! YOU SAVED MY DAY:)))
AWESOME thank you, this really helps
I got here too late (ie: after spending all my day yesterday trying to get rid of it) and finally googled in english and salved! :)

HELP!!
I just burned a dvd from windows dvd maker and the bottom half of the screen is green. I then I tried to follow the steps to fix the problem but when i went to start menu, all programs to find Xvid i could not find anything. what do I do?????
Thank you so much this totally helped :)
THANK YOU. I had a presentation I was working on and that green bar looked so unprofessional. Your advice was quick and it worked. My stress level has gone down by about 1000 points.
Great, except one problem: there's no "xvid" in my Start menu. There's an Xvid folder in some obscure location in the deepest depths of my computer, but no actual application. Just a setup. Do I need to re-install it or something?
amazing and completely genius! you deserve a prize!
Thanks Man you saved me a bunch of time!
safe bruv
I think were up to 3 years of thank yous from the land of the video options noobs. A big thank you from me to you for your advice and help and for taking the time to spread some goodwill.

thank you so frickin much. I was so upset that my video was ruined and now its fixed. Ah!!!! Thanks xxxxxxx
I'd like to thank the original poster and Stomb971, who said:
"When you go to publish your movie, it gives you the option of settings go down to MORE SETTINGS and select DV-AVI (NTSC) Your movie will be saved as an .avi...and won't have that green bar!"
I'd like to add that, when you change the settings Stomb971's way, you have other choices that will give you better resolution.
THANKS, both of you!!!
Thanks,
I love you.
Adam
works just fine now much props 4 someone who knows what their doing thankx.
So, that's a good start. The first step towards getting rid of the green bar should be to disable decoders in Windows Movie Maker.
If that doesn't work however, or if half or all of your footage is now blacked out when you publish, then there's a second step you must take to clear up your footage. A mixture of 'green bar' and 'black out' happens when you're cutting together clips of various file types or that used different codecs.
So, to fix this, just make sure all the clips you're using are of the same codec or file type. I converted all my footage to 'vidx' files, then unchecked the 'vidx' decoders in Movie Maker, and my problem was solved.
All of those people who have Windows Vista 64 bit and could not fix the half green bar, try to install Vista Codec Pack for 64bit, but before that you must have Vista Codec Pack 32bit as its the pre-requisite for 64 bit. I hope it'll help those who could not make it work so far.
A big kiss for you! It helped!
OMG, i love you. Thank You soooooooo much ! :)
Thanks sooo much. I have been trying to figure out what was wrong for days. You saved me so much time.
I just wanted to share that this DID NOT work for me because I do NOT have Xvid on my computer, I have DivX Plus. All the fixes online are all for Xvid codecs. Going into the compatibility settings in Windows Movie Marker (tools, options, compatibility und unchecking the DivX decoder filter) did NOT work either. It removed the green bar but also made my entire video a black screen with only the sound working.
After playing around with it myself, I figured out how to get it to work. For those of you who are having this green bar issue and have DivX Plus, THIS is how to resolve the green bar issue:
Go to start, all programs, DivX Plus, Codec Settings. Then click on the "advanced" tab and uncheck all the boxes that are highlighted.
You may have to restart your PC and redo your project in movie maker but once you publish the video the green bar issue will be gone.
thank you so much i was about to pull all of my hair out until i saw your post! your awesome!
Thank You Steph! That was my problem too!!!! Hurray! Now- I just hope I don't have to make the project again- I used 8 hours...
It works!!! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
HEY!!!!
IT WORKED !:O I made a project for school ... :) THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH :)!!!!
Now I got something for you guys :)!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
If it is not working right away, you just have to restart Windows Media Player then it works, if you download and do the decoder and not shuting WMM while or after it wont work !:)
Thanks you Bernie !:)
Hey, I guess everybody's computer is different. Mine for example doesn't have Xvid (which I have unticked originally). I have Windows Vista, and Dvix and I went Tools, Options, Compatibility and unticked the two Dvix decoders and it worked. But until then....I f#@&-ed my brain out! So, this blog at least put me in the right direction.
Thank you.
hey, i dont have xvid on my computer? any help with that?:P
You are a Cybernaut saver!!
THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot! :-)
Coady, I have the same issue. I use Dvix and vista, not Xvid. Did you ever find a solution? I tried using the instructions PrincessLilou gave, but I don't have an "options" option under Tools. I'm kinda at a roadblock at this point.
Thank you Soooo Much.
ok i tried that and now my vids are all just black with no sound, great...
I don't understand everything, but I'm sure it would have worked, if I was better in english. :(
THANK YOU!!!
If you click "All Programs" and don't see XVid,
Click "Start" and in the search box, type
CONFIGURE DECODER
Someone else left that instruction, but I couldn't find the post again to thank them. There is a quite a list. Let me add my sincere thanks to the list. You saved my project!
UPDATE
The person with the helpful post was "Blah" on November 12, 2008
Thanks Blah. Couldn't find XVid, but clicked Start, and searched "configure decoder". Opened the program, followed Bernie's directions.... and it was a fix.
Thanks, this fixed it for me!
Man that was annoying!!
WHat XVID? I tried looking for that and it isnt in the programs list. Any other Ideas?
Help - I have a Vista and have this problem. I followed these instructions but when I searched for XviD all I got was XviD Encoder and StatsReader. What do I do/download?
Thank you for reading
I only have divX and still have the stupid green bar, I can't seem to find Xvid or the configure Decoder >0<
Man - I'm sooo glad other people were having this issue too.
Just followed the instructions and publishing now. Fingers crossed :)
thanks for the tip
the tip still works - thanks :)
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!
Thank you !! Perfect solution. For anyone who's having problems, I had to install XVID codec, then exit windows movie maker, then follow the steps outlined, then go back into the movie maker and save my movie as an AVI. Not sure if WMV still works, but I saved as an AVI and it was fine.
Thank you so much!!!! It worked!
Thanks a lot, this saved me a lot of stress!
Thank you so much!!!!It worked!!!!!
Absolute legend
It still works !
Many thanks! This fixed my problem!!! =)
I can't thank you enough!
Cheers
THANK YOU SO FREAKIN' MUCH!!!

Thank you file mou.
Thank you so much, I can't wait to try it out tonight. Based on the comments, I'm sure it will work out fine, so thanks in advance!
Ive never said thanks online before, always just took the advice for granted but this time, YOU are a legend. you actually saved my website Haha, thank you. This WORKS!
If your still in the s#+t with it, just download the NEWEST VER of xvid, install over the top of what you have, let it do what it wants, THEN follow this mans advice and go into its setting and disable part of it and it does fix it. Thank god!
I have a similar problem but with windows 7 and I only get the green bar after upload to Youtube. the file on my computer is flawless. I don't have those options for changing the decoder on my computer. I went to Start Menu-All Programs but there is no XVid.....help!
Wow, after so many years this is still very useful.
Thank you!
@Keithia you need to install XVID first, its free.
thank you so much!
Thanks. Now i can show the whole world how i dealed with those pesty wasps.
You, Sir (Madam), are an absolute angel! A guardian one! :)
