I first wrote about this about a week ago, but tonight I'm certain that Google Reader is losing my unread items. I don't see anyone else reporting this via Google Blog Search or Bloglines Search, but I know it's happening. The last report I can find online is from back in June when Robert Scoble first reported on this debacle.
Any other Google Reader users seeing this? I hope for your sake that I'm alone in this, but then again that may mean the problem isn't being looked at.

Sorry to hear it's been happening to you too, Mike. What compounds the problem for me is the fact that I've got something like 2,298 unread items at the moment (not including any additional items in the feeds that currently say 1000+). I'm worried I'm losing a lot more than I've noticed. But I'm definitely noticing it more now that I'm paying closer attention.
I guess I can't completely blame Google Reader, since I am using it when it's still listed as part of Google Labs, but maybe I need to switch over to the Bloglines Beta for a while until things smooth over.
I've sent an email to the Google Reader team.
I got a cookie cutter reply back from the email I sent, so I've started a new thread in the Google Reader Help group.

It happens to me as well. Most of the time it's not a problem as I stay current on feeds, but if there's an extended break where I don't check up on feeds, then it's a crap-shoot. I'll see 70 unread posts one day and 63 the next, even though I never even opened up that feed. Most of the time I just write it off and say "I don't have time to go back and read all those posts, so no big deal." But if there's something I've wanted to read and Google Reader loses it, then it's a bit more frustrating
