Reading It's not about the spam reassured me that Gmail, the service I use for the bulk of my personal email, was making gains in the fight against spam. It felt particularly good to read that post because I have had so little spam show up in my inbox as it is. However, all the while I have gotten complaints from my brother, my fiancée and others that their luck with spam in Gmail hasn't been so good. Then, as if Google's post had been the equivalent of Walter Peck unleashing ghosts on New York City, I started seeing more and more spam showing up in my inbox this past week:

My one mistake may have been using my Gmail address when hunting for birthday presents for my fiancée on Craigslist over the past week and a half, but I've used it before and didn't see any impact as far as spam is concerned.

At this point, I'm really hoping it's a fluke and Gmail will get things under control again. I really liked their graphs and want to believe they are indicative of what's really going on. However, as they say, the proof is in the pudding.

So far, Gmail is still working really well for me. Maybe twice in the past two weeks I have received a spam in my inbox, which is the most ever, and I use Gmail for five or six different email accounts. I've also only had one false positive (that I know of...), which is far better than what I get with SpamAssassin and similar anti-spam methods. It's encouraging that spam has gone down some; hopefully other email providers will take an aggressive stance against spam and spammers will become increasingly frustrated. I think we need to declare war on spammers and eliminate their WMD (Weapons of Mass Distraction)...
